Memory Lane: Back in time at the Grantham Journal

Thanks to former Grantham Journal compositor Fred Tilley, who carefully kept old photographs taken inside our old offices, we can go back in time and see how the newspaper was once put together.

As explained by our sports editor John Burgess, the first in this series of photographs shows former Journal advertising manager Mick Townsend using a composing stick to assemble lead type in the Journal’s commercial department.

The old letterpress equipment was formerly used to typeset the Journal before the advent of computerised typesetting.
