Then and Now: Middlemore Yard in Grantham consisted of 21 houses, most containing only two rooms




Middlemore Yard consisted of 21 houses, most containing only two rooms, writes Ruth Crook of Grantham Civic Society

Many of the occupants were labourers, bricklayers or worked at the gas works.In 1837 ten of the houses were sold and were advertised as previously realising a rent of 40/- per annum.

By 1841 a Grantham man Thomas Henry Rowton aged 30, was living at 10, Middlemore Yard, one of the few three room houses, which he was using as a day school for local children.

On 25 October 1856 he took out the following advertisement in the Grantham Journal. ‘Day School, Middlemore Yard, Castlegate, Grantham. H Rowton, having at this time a vacancy for three or four Scholars, assured those parents who may intrust their children to his care, that every attention shall be paid to their improvement. He also takes this opportunity of thanking those parents who have hither to assisted in supporting him’.

Mr Rowton continued teaching these local children until his death in April 1865 aged 54.
