A large engraved stone has been discovered in the River Witham at South Witham.
Peter Ball was out walking when he came across the stone last month.
He said: “The dry weather had dried out the river. It weighs 24 kg and is probably Mastic Bitchumen which was brought back to Europe by Sir Francis Drake.
"It has an inscription 1076 or 1676 A 70 or 701. It was found near the new bridge.”
