Grantham Civic Society publishes new edition of book on the life of St Wulfram

Grantham Civic Society has published a new edition of a book on The Life and Times of St Wulfram which first appeared in 1878 .

The book has been published with a new introduction by civic society secretary John Manterfield to mark the 1,300th anniversary of Wulfram’s death.

The book was originally written by Rev William Glaister who was appointed curate in Grantham in 1876 and was made vicar of St Wulfram’s church in 1883.

Mr Manterfield said: "My introduction includes, amongst other research, information taken from the Grantham Journal about the illustrated address that he was presented with by grateful parishioners as a farewell gift.

"Glaister described the early life of Wulfram and how he became Archbishop of Sens in 693 AD and then led a mission to the Frisian islands in 700AD. Whilst there, he tried to convert the local pagan Saxon King, Duke Rathbod. Although he did succeed making many other converts, Rathbod remained a pagan to the end of his days.

"Wulfram returned to the monastery at St Wandrille's Abbey at Fontenelle, near Rouen, which he had left prior to his missionary work, and died there in 720AD.

"Sadly, the coronavirus has prevented the last remaining relic of St Wulfram, part of his skull, being received in Grantham on March 20.

"Glaister himself died in February 1919 and the window at the east end of the Lady Chapel of St Wulfram's church was erected in his memory. This window is featured on the back cover of the new edition."

Copies of the book may be ordered from Mr Manterfield at john.manterfield@talk21.com, price £4 (postage and packing £2 if required).
