New Mayor of Grantham receives chains of office in traditional ceremony

The new mayor of Grantham took up her post this evening in the traditional mayor-making ceremony.

Coun Lynda Coutts was ‘dragged’ from the council chamber by Coun Felicity Cunningham and Coun Jacky Smith in front of guests as part of the tradition in the mayor-making ceremony, held in the council chamber.

Coun Mrs Jacky Smith, who nominated Coun Coutts, praised the new mayor for "already making an impression."

She said: "Despite being a new councillor, Coun Coutts has already made an impression on the council chamber and the council offices. She is known for her infectious laugh and has certainly brought a liveliness and warmth to the council chamber. She has taken on her new role with a broad smile and the idea that it is very much a challenge that she is looking forward to."

Outgoing Mayor Coun Mike Cook presented the chains of office to Coun Coutts, and described her as 'a breath of fresh air.'

He said: "Being mayor is an honour. I am sure Coun Coutts will fill the role admirably. Her experience is extensive and she will bring a breath of fresh air to the council office."

In her first speech as mayor, Coun Coutts told guests that she is looking forward to supporting the people of Grantham.

She added: "I will do my utmost to promote the town. I will enthusiastically support the Grantham residents and promote the various businesses. I look forward to serving the whole of the community."

Coun Nikki Manterfield becomes her deputy after being nominated by Coun Ray Wootten, who described Coun Manterfield as "pleasant, kind and caring and a nurse at our much loved Grantham Hospital."

The nomination was seconded by Coun Linda Wootten, who added: "Coun Manterfield is one of our younger members. I am sure she will have lots of new ideas and do us proud."

Coun Manterfield has represented Grantham Springfield on South Kesteven District Council since she won her seat in 2015.
