Portuguese cafe opens on Grantham High Street

O Alentejano, a Portuguese cafe, has opened its doors in Grantham.

The new business, in High Street, is run by Arnaldo Gose and wife Cristina, aged 60 and 54 respectively.

Having previously run Flower the Bakery on Westgate, the couple are selling a similar range of Portuguese cakes, pastries and scones, as well as coffee and beer.

Cristina said: “It’s good. We have the same customers as before, everyone knows to come here now.”

The custard tart has proved to be the most popular item sold at O Alentejano. However, more Portuguese-themed dishes are apparently on their way.

Cristina continued: “We are not cooking here yet, the kitchen has been left in a bit of a mess. We are hoping by April to have the kitchen sorted, then I will be able to cook Portuguese food, with big breakfasts.”

The cafe is in what was Tudors Restaurant and Wine Bar, and before that Catlin’s, believed to be the birthplace of Grantham Gingerbread.
