‘Not all training is created equal’ says Grantham dog walker Sara Barnes

The importance of including your dog in summer activities is the focus of this month’s column by Grantham dog walker Sara Barnes, of Who Lets Your Dog Out?. She writes:

Now the schools have broken up for the summer, you will all want to be getting out and enjoying days out with friends, families and, of course, your dogs.

But none of us want to spend the day out being dragged around by the dog or have them lunging/barking at other dogs they see. The earache and the sore arms or shoulders are not what we want as a reminder of the day out.

So, now is the time to get back on the training wagon and addressing the big problem your dog has, that stops you wanting to take them on your days out.

I’m not a trainer, but I know many of the dogs we walk on a regular basis have at least one problem area that could be helped with some regular training.

Not everyone likes the class environment, or has the work patterns that fit around classes, but with the internet today you will probably find a trainer that says they can fix your problem if you just watch their video on (insert problem).

Remember, all the family need to use the same technique/commands when training the dog so it’s easier for the dog to learn and understand what is being asked of them.

Now not every technique will work for every dog, and I know some people will say it’s because their dog is a spaniel or a shar-pei or any other breed, but there are also trainers and forums out there that focus on specific breeds.

I have a friend who is known as the ‘Spaniel Guru’ for example, and another that is the ‘Teenage Gundog Tamer’ – she really likes her Labradors!

Whatever you do, stay clear of anyone suggesting using fear or intimidation to get your dog to behave as you want them to; it may work but it will harm your relationship with your dog. Better to make slower and healthier progress and both you and your dog learn the best way to work together than breaking your relationship with your dog.

If you really can’t take the dog then consider getting them booked in for care with your normal dog walker, day care or home boarding provider. Leaving them home alone all day whilst you are out is no fun for them and it’s their summer holidays as well. And book it soon, before they get booked up.
