Nursery tots toddle around Long Bennington for charity

A group of nursery toddlers took part in a sponsored toddle last month to raise funds for two children’s charities.

Children and staff from King’s Farm Day Nursery in Long Bennington are busy raising money for Bliss, the leading UK charity for babies born prematurely or sick, after one of their little friends at nursery was born more than three months premature.

Tallulah Zachowicz was born at 25 weeks and spent the first six months of her life in hospital. Tallulah, who is now a thriving two-year-old, underwent a heart operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital shortly after birth before being transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Tallulah’s ‘nan nan’, Allison Jane Zachowicz, has been the manager at the nursery for 10 years and wanted a way to support the charity.

She said: “They supported our family so much and so we wanted to give something back.

“More than 25 of us took part in the toddle and walked around the village. It took two hours and 6,000 adult steps.”

They were also fund-raising for Children with Cancer UK after a little boy at nursery was diagnosed with cancer last year and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Allison added: “He is now doing really well at school.”

As well as the sponsored toddle, staff at the nursery hosted a charity disco at Long Bennington Village Hall on Saturday and raised more than £500.

Their fund-raising doesn’t end there.

Tap and Tonic, in Grantham Market Place, have created a purple gin and are donating £1.50 from each sale towards the nursery’s fund-raising efforts.

Despite already raising more than £600 which will be split equally between the two charities, Allison and her staff are already planning three more fund-raising events in the next few months.

Allison added: “We are going to go out in Grantham dressed in onesies with a fund-raising bucket and another night in Newark. We are also planning a two hour Zumbathon with the The Beth Cresswell School Of Dance, Grantham.”

To make a donation, contact the nursery on 01400 282662 or send a cheque.
