Obituary: Mr George Edward Murphy
Mr George Edward Murphy, of Derwent Road, Grantham, has died at home. He was 79.
Mr Murphy was born in Elswick, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the second eldest of five children born to the late Sydney and Elizabeth Murphy.
In June 1955 he married Shirley and they had three daughters, Barbara, Janet and Catherine, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Mr Murphy’s first job was at the Co-op on Dudley Road, Grantham.
He then did his National Service and on returning home, he worked at Tersons. He was later employed at BMARC, from where he retired.
In his younger days he played football for Harrowby United and had trials for Notts County.
He became secretary for the Westend Pigeon Club.
Mr Murphy enjoyed all outdoor sports as well as boxing, football, fishing, cricket and Formula 1 motor racing.
The funeral service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, conducted by Robert Holland.
