Colsterworth Performing Arts Festival dazzles in 24th year

The Colsterworth Festival of Performing Arts is wowing audiences once again in its 24th year of putting on show-stopping performances of dance, music, drama and film.

Since 1997, the three-week festival has been widely popular, attracting thousands of spectators and participants from local schools, including competitors from Barrowby, Isaac Newton, Dudley House, Colsterworth and Grantham Preparatory.

This week saw in excess of 2,000 dancers participating, from not only local schools but from those across the East Midlands, including in Stamford, Bourne, Derby and Nottingham.

Festival chairman Julia Kerby said she was “really really proud of the whole team who have worked their socks off organising the event”.

She added praise for local dressmakers as “the dresses were commented on by the adjudicators”.

Julia went on to say of the festival: “This is not about making money but everyone coming together as a community.”

The festival aims to create a friendly but competitive environment where young talent can find their way and flourish in a competitive format.

The assigned adjudicator for each event provides competitors with a certificate and also useful feedback on how to improve their performance.

The majority of classes have trophies or medals for first, second and third places, and three bursary prizes are awarded annually to dance pupils who show great promise and ambition by the adjudicators.

This goes towards tuition fees with first place receiving £100, second place receiving £50 and all dancers receiving £10 just for participating.

These five days of dance are all managed, organised and executed by volunteers and nine committee members who overlook the entire event.

They still have more to come over the next two weeks with a ‘schools showcase’ coming up, along with music, drama and film.

Host of the dance competitions this year, Priory Ruskin Academy has been commended by the committee for its excellent facilities, friendly and helpful staff and an environment that feels welcoming to all the attendees.
