Plans for maintenance work on listed Bellmount Tower which is ‘showing signs of neglect’
A historic tower could have its first high level repairs in 20 years if plans are given the green light.
The National Trust has submitted plans to make repairs on the Grade II* listed Bellmount Tower, which sits in the grounds of Belton House.
Works such as stone indents, repointing and roof repairs are included within the plans.
Internal works would also be carried out, if the plans are approved, which include plaster repairs and works to the windows to ensure “weather tightness”.
The application said: “This work is basically viewed as like for like repairs using sympathetic materials with minimal intervention.
“Bellmount Tower has not had any repairs and maintenance undertaken at high level for at least 20 years.
“This being due to the need to scaffold the structure.
“The property is showing signs of neglect and the need for repairs to maintain it’s structural integrity.”
A minimal intervention approach would be adopted, using “like for like” materials.
The application continued: “This is a very remote structure within the National Trust Belton Estate with pedestrian access only.
“The National Trust hope that by undertaking this schedule of works the property will be in a suitable condition to allow public access (accompanied and in small groups) to the first floor viewing area.
“Serious thought has gone into the use of materials.”
The site is also known to be a bat roost of “significant importance” to the National Trust.
A period of July and September 2023 has been suggested as the ideal time to make the repairs, based on previous bat surveys.
