Plans show scrapping of pay-to-use Grantham toilets and expansion of Guildhall facilities

Pay-to-use toilet facilities in Grantham look set to be closed as part of plans to reconfigure the Guildhall Arts Centre.

The loos in Abbey Gardens are run by South Kesteven District Council, and are to be redesigned as part of plans to “revise and modernise” the facilities in the neighbouring Guildhall.

If they go ahead, the plans would see the turnstiles in Abbey Gardens removed and two new cycle change facilities installed. Two existing toilets which are accessed externally, including one for the disabled, would remain.

Walls would be moved to allow the toilet areas to be incorporated into the Guildhall facilities, creating larger female and male toilets and a new 13-person changing room accessible from the rear of the theatre.

Baby changing facilities would feature in both the male and female toilets.

An application submitted to the council’s planning department states: “In undertaking the toilet refurbishment/reconfiguration SKDC are looking to future-proof [the Guildhall] and support the continued use of the building as a multi-use building into the foreseeable future.

“Feasibility works will be undertaken to provide options on how the building could be altered to support the continued use and service provision going forwards.

“This application includes proposed the addition of further dressing room facilities for the theatre and a cycle changing provision accessible from Abbey Gardens only, which was lost as part of the enabling works for the Savoy Cinema building.”

The Journal understands that the plan has since been placed on hold.
