Plans to convert former South Kesteven District Council offices in Grantham into 24 flats

An application has been submitted to convert former council offices in Grantham into 24 flats.

The former South Kesteven District Council offices in St Peter’s Hill could be converted into 24 flats.

Plans lodged by M W Willett Homes Ltd seek to convert the vacant offices into homes, with some minor alterations proposed.

SKDC staff moved into the new headquarters above the Savoy Cinema back in January, in a move that sought to save taxpayers an estimated £300,000 a year in running costs.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the council had a blended approach of working from home and in-office, so they no longer needed large premises as they could operate in a "more agile way", explained an SKDC spokesperson.

The office building was put on the market earlier this year, with the asking price available on application, and was marked as ‘under offer’ in July.

The proposed conversion relates to the “more modern” section of the offices, located to the south of the former main entrance which is accessed via the walkway between Grantham Museum and the Guildhall.

The application said: “This part of the building, which is now truncated from the council chamber building, dates from the 1980s and extends over three floors.”

The 24 proposed flats would consist of 17 one-bedroom units, suitable for one person; four one-bedroom flats designed for two people, and a trio of two-bedroom flats.

The application explained that the arrangement of the flats had been “based largely upon the existing configuration of rooms” and that the proposed exterior changes would be the addition of three windows and a smoke vent.
