Policewoman injured: Grantham MP Gareth Davies addresses Jacob Rees-Mogg in Parliament on incident that left officer with a fractured skull

MP for Grantham and Stamford Gareth Davies addressed the House of Commons today (Thursday) with regards to an incident that left a police officer with a fractured skull.

A 36-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving in relation to the incident that occurred in the car park of Sainsburys on London Road, Grantham.

The incident, which left a female police officer with a fractured skull, took place at around 9.40am yesterday (Wednesday).

Although the officer in question was taken to hospital, a Lincolnshire Police spokesperson confirmed that she was "making a good recovery".

Addressing the House, Mr Davies said: "Yesterday morning in Grantham in my constituency, a Lincolnshire Police officer was struck and injured by a vehicle driven by a suspect she was seeking to apprehend.

"Will the leader of the House join me in sending our best wishes to the injured police officer? And will he agree to a debate on how we can best keep our police officers safe in the line of duty?"

Jacob Rees-Mogg, Leader of the House of Commons, said: "Yes, of course I will send my best wishes and I think the whole house would their best wishes to the police officer who has been injured.

"Attacks on the police are always very worrying and we should be grateful to our brave police, who stand on duty courageously, never knowing quite what might hit them.

"I think [Mr Davies] is right to be asking for a debate on this. Obviously, there will be opportunities as legislation comes forward to debate it in government time, but the Backbench Business Committee is a main source for debates of this kind, along with adjournment debates.

"But it is, as my honourable friend knows, an issue that the government takes very, very seriously."
