Poll: Which of the final Conservative candidates for party leader Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss would you like to see as the new Prime Minister?




Conservative party members will now have the final say on who becomes the next Tory leader and the country's Prime Minister.

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will campaign for the backing of the membership with an eventual winner declared in September.

Mr Sunak and Ms Truss were confirmed as the final two candidates after the latest round of voting by MPs on Wednesday saw Penny Mordaunt eliminated from the race.

The results were announced by 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady who also set a timescale for the membership vote.

Ms Mourdant, the Minster of State for Trade was knocked out with 105 votes, eight fewer than Ms Truss.

Mr Sunak led at every round of voting with MPs and in the final round secured 137 votes compared to Ms Truss's 113. Grantham MP Gareth Davies declared his support for Mr Sunak early in the contest.

The attention now switches to Conservative Party members who can vote for their favourite until September 2.

A result is expected on September 5.
