Popular Grantham restaurant to close after 12 years
A popular family-run restaurant is closing this week after 12 years in business.
Barkers Restaurant on Vine Street, Grantham, will close its doors for good on Sunday, citing uncertainty over the high street as one of the main reasons for the closure.
Owners Daniel and Jodie Barker opened Barkers in 2007 offering traditional, home cooked food for their loyal customers.
But the couple have decided not to renew their lease due to concerns about the future of the high street and the deterioration of the 16th century building as well as to spend more time with their two daughters.
Jodie, who worked as a manager at Travelodge at Gonerby Moor Services, Grantham, before opening Barkers, said: “We mainly cater for the older generation as youngsters don’t seem to want proper homemade food anymore. But there is also the uncertainty of the high street, mainly we feel due to the two shopping outlets being placed either end of the town. There are also the plans for houses to be built on Watergate car park. It just feels like the right time for us to close.”
The decision has been made more difficult due to their loyal customers.
Jodie, 37, added: “We will miss them all and we would like to take this opportunity to thank our regular customers who we now class as friends for the loyalty over the last 12 years. It’s the end of an era.”
But it won’t be the last that customers will see of Jodie as she prepares to embark on her own meal home delivery service from March.
Jodie added: “Barkers Homemade Meals will be aimed at the older generation as I know how much people look forward to a home cooked meal and for many it’s the highlight of their day. It means that they can enjoy a freshly prepared meal in the comfort of their own home.”
