Quarry company wants to create concrete block making facility

A quarry company has submitted a planning application to construct a concrete block manufacturing facility in Colsterworth.

The proposed development by Geo Quarries (Colsterworth) Ltd involves the construction and operation of a concrete block manufacturing facility on the 4.2 hectares site to the south of the A151.

The site is currently vacant industrial land, with the development anticipated to create a total of 40 jobs.

Twenty-five of those jobs will be based on site, with a further 15 off-site roles, such as HGV drivers, technical consultants and administrative staff at the company headquarters, based in Leeds.

Most of the material used by the facility will be imported from Little Ponton quarry, which is around nine kilometres north of the site of the proposed development.

The applicant said: “The development involves the construction and operation of a facility to manufacture dense concrete blocks, providing a range of products that will support the construction industry throughout South Kesteven and the wider region.

“The site has been previously developed as a storage facility and forms part of a wider parcel of land allocated for employment use within SKDC’s Local Plan.

“Despite the site’s previous development, it has remained underutilised throughout its recent history.

“Relatively little permanent infrastructure will be required and the development will utilise the existing industrial access to the A151. The process will take place in the open, with no production buildings required and the majority of the plant being either mobile or modular.”

The application also addresses potential concerns regarding added noise and increased traffic in the area. It says any noise levels associated with the development are predicted to be below existing background levels.

The proposal also says: “Daily movements are not expected to have any significant impact on traffic flows across the local highway network.”
