Railway station near Grantham among least used in the UK




With just 164 people using the station last year, Elton and Orston has been listed in the UK’s top 10 least used.

According to statistics by the Office of Rail and Road, the station, owned by East Midlands Trains, had just 164 passenger entries and exits in 2018-19, ranking it sixth.

Elton and Orston station is just off Station Road, half-way between the two villages.

It has had an average of just 134 users per year over the past nine years.

The lowest number of users were in both 2011-12 and 2012-13 with 72 entries and exits, and the highest in 2015-16 with 296.

Orston Parish Council chairman Will Gunn said it was not surprising as trains now only stopped there if requested.

He said: “When we were young everyone used it.

“The kids going to school in Grantham would take the train every day and it used to stop in Elton and Orston every
hour.

“Nowadays it is slightly more difficult to get to, it’s quite a walk.”

There are 2,566 train stations in the UK.

Ranking 174th on the least used list is Ancaster, with 5,904 users in the same period.

Meanwhile, Grantham is ranked 420th busiest, with 1,413,006 users.

Bingham was 1,845th busiest, with an estimated 77,128 users.

The statistics showed Aslockton was ranked 2,136th busiest in the country, with 31,204 users.

The statistics reveal the busiest station was London Waterloo, with 94,192,680 users.
