Children try out new play area equipment in Gonerby Hill Foot, Grantham
Schoolchildren have been given first go on new play equipment unveiled in Gonerby Hill Foot.
The revamped play area at Gonerby Hill Foot Park was officially opened today (July 11) with 30 children from Gonerby Hill Foot Primary School trying out the new equipment.
More than £100,000 worth of funding was raised by Gonerby Hill Foot Park Action Group, in partnership with South Kesteven District Council, to improve the facilities.
As well as third-party funding from local businesses and charities – including £5,000 from the RotarySwimarathon – a grant was provided by FCC Communities Foundation to install new equipment and fencing.
RotarySwimarathon leader Roger Graves said: “Having supported Wyndham and Dysart parks we are pleased to be able to support another area of the town.”
The play area was officially opened by Councillor Paul Stokes, cabinet member for leisure and culture.
Also in attendance was Councillor Paul Martin, ward member for Grantham Arnoldfield and representatives from Gonerby Hill Foot Park Action Group.
Coun Stokes said: “Green spaces across South Kesteven are a tremendous asset and we will continue to improve them for the benefit of local communities.
“This project has been made possible through the council’s partnership with the Gonerby Hill Foot Park Action Group and thanks to funding from the FCC Communities Foundations. I would also like to thank Moy Park, Grantham Rotary Club (Swimarathon), Asda Community Fund and National Lottery Community Fund for their donations to such a fantastic cause.
“This project will support the younger generation to be active and make the most out of their local community so it is heartwarming to see so many children enjoying the rejuvenated play facilities today.”
The improved facilities, installed by Wicksteed Leisure, includes new climbing apparatus, roundabouts and swing sets.
FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects through the Landfill Communities Fund.
Chery Raynor, FCC Communities Foundation grant manager said: “It was a fantastic day, not only seeing the children enjoying the new play area but also allowing everyone to thank the Action Group who kick-started the project 12 months ago, their hard work and determination could be seen in the smile of every child here today.”
