Robin builds nest inside toy at Grantham school

A robin has set up home and built its nest inside a toy at a school.

Pupils at Grantham Preparatory School on Gorse Lane were delighted when their teaching assistant discovered the nest inside a toy pirate ship in their outdoor play area last week when she was setting up for the day.

With the robin away when the nest was discovered, it gave staff and children the chance to have a closer inspection and they spotted four eggs.

They all left the area and the robin reappeared and made herself quite comfy.

Preschool lead Jane Whinney has welcomed their new visitor.

She said: “We barricaded off the area to give the robin some space and privacy. It has meant though that the children can’t access the outdoor playing area so it has taught them some patience and shown them that sometimes nature take precedence over normal activities.”

The school’s caretaker has set up a CCTV camera to capture the action.

Jane added: “We have a monitor in the classroom so we are hoping to see some fledglings in next week or so.

“The children have been really excited. It is great that it is happening right on their doorstep and follows on nicely from our live hatchery in April.

“Our topic this term is ‘Open your eyes’ - I don’t think that their eyes could be any wider.”
