‘Say no to Denton quarry plans’ urges GOLAG

Villagers are being urged to act fast before an appeal goes ahead against the county council’s decision to refuse an application to build a huge quarry and landfill tip in countryside to the south of Denton.

The proposals generated protests from residents in Denton, Harlaxton and Croxton Kerrial, who formed the Gorse Lane Action Group (GOLAG) in a bid to stop the quarry going ahead.

Campaigners fear the surrounding countryside will be harmed and the area plagued by heavy lorries, dust, and noise.

Around 100 protesters attended a meeting of Lincolnshire County Council’s (LCC) planning and regulation committee at The Meres Leisure Centre last October, where county councillors unanimously rejected the plans to a round of applause and cheers.

The application was submitted by construction industry supplier Mick George Ltd, who has appealed against their decision. A planning inspector will now hold a seperate hearing to decide whether to uphold LCC’s decision or grant Mick George approval.

GOLAG chairman Gaile McMillan has been expecting the appeal and is working on their next steps.

She said: “We’ve known that an appeal was on the cards since October. We will still work on behalf of the community as we fully support the decision reached by LCC to reject the application for a quarry and inert land-fill on the grounds that we do need the limestone and that the quarry would have an adverse effect on Grade II listed buildings.

“We also believe that our additional concerns on potential negative impacts on our communities and on our environment still need to be aired at the enquiry.”

Gaile is confident about the appeal but is still appealing for residents to take action and make their voices heard.

She added: “People can still write to the inspectorate of the inquiry, Leanne Palmer, provided they can add to their original letter or they have recently moved into the area, but be quick as we need them by June 1.

“Your additional support beforehand would be very helpful and could make all the difference. Your letters will have a real impact and will reflect the views of the community.”
