Cost rise for bus passes for Toot Hill School, Bingham, by Sharpes of Nottingham, due to operating costs increase heaps pressure on financially-struggling parents

The price of a school bus pass has risen over £100, adding to the rocky road that parents are finding themselves on as the cost of living continues to rise.

Sharpes of Nottingham, which runs buses to Toot Hill School, Bingham, during the school term, has increased the cost of an annual pass by 17%, meaning it leapt from £817 to £950.

Newark and Bingham MP Robert Jenrick has received emails from upset and worried parents.

Mr Jenrick said he had taken the matter up with both the school and the county council.

The Confederation of Passengers Transport, which represents the bus company, said the fare increase was down to increased operating costs.

Graham Vidler, chief executive of the Confederation of Passenger Transport, the trade association of the UK bus and coach sector said: “According to CPT research, bus operators’ costs have increased by 17% in the last twelve months.

“This is being driven by price rises in key materials, such as fuel and tyres as well as a competitive labour market, forcing the sector to pay more for drivers and engineers.

“While operators never want to increase fares, many across the country are now facing a stark choice between passing on a proportion of their costs onto passengers or withdrawing services, meaning schoolchildren could be cut adrift from vital educational opportunities.”

The school admitted to being aware of the financial pressures on families and said it was concerned to find out about the proposal just as the summer break started.

Toot Hill School headteacher, Chris Eardley said: “We immediately spoke with Sharpes of Nottingham to explore the reasons for the increase, and to see what could be done to try and limit the impact on families.

“As this is a private contract, there is no official requirement for the company to consult on any cost increases, but we were grateful to them for talking through the pressure they are under with the increased costs they are facing.

“The school advised all parents who receive grants or benefits or are struggling with payments, to apply to the Local Authority directly for support.”

School transport information is available on the school’s website.

Fare payers also have the option to buy a term pass or pay daily or weekly tickets.
