The King’s School in Grantham pays tribute to ‘highly respected’ former deputy headmaster and physics teacher
A Grantham school has paid tribute to a former headmaster and teacher who recently died.
Gerald Dyer, former deputy headmaster and physics teacher at the King’s School, died peacefully last month, aged 85.
The school has paid tribute to the former deputy head, who also served as interim headmaster between 1981 and 1982.
Gerald passed away in Anya Court Care Home, Rugby, on Sunday October 8, and will be “greatly missed” by Helen, Ali, Pete, Dan and Anna along with a wide circle of family and friends.
In September 1978, Gerald began teaching physics at the King’s School, where he worked until his retirement in August 2000.
During his 22 years at the school, Gerald fulfilled many roles, but was best known as deputy headmaster.
In a statement, the school said that Gerald was “highly respected by staff and students alike”, and “supported the school” when taking on the role of interim headmaster from 1981 to 1982.
The tribute continued: “His formal no-nonsense manner belied a genuine concern, compassion and a dry sense of humour which was never far from the surface.
“In his younger days, Gerald was an accomplished all-round athlete and a particularly good footballer who was always keen to participate in the staff student matches.
“Whilst he demanded high standards from staff, students, and himself, he was also an incredibly kind man who was always willing to listen, advise and praise. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered.”
Gerald’s life will be celebrated on Monday November 20. There will be a private cremation for the family, followed by a service of thanksgiving from 12.30pm at Grantham Baptist Church in Wharf Road.
Mourners are advised that they do not need to wear black should they not wish, and not to give flowers. Instead, donations can be made to Gerald’s chosen charity at the service or through Robert Holland Funeral Directors.
