School youngsters tackle road safety outside their school
Safety-conscious pupils at a village school are working on a road safety project to help keep children and adults safe on the roads outside their school.
Year 5 and 6 pupils at Harlaxton Primary School are aiming to help tackle persistent issues including parking issues around the school.
As part of the project, they welcomed Jo Collett, Lincolnshire road safety officer, last Wednesday who spoke to them about road safety and took them on a tour of the village to witness some of the issues first hand.
One Year 6 pupil, said: “It’s important to learn how to keep safe so people don’t get hurt on the road. When we walked around the village, we saw people parking their cars on the pavements and on yellow lines.”
Together they have designed an assembly to present to the younger children to warn them of the dangers on the roads particularly through the winter months and the dark evenings. They have also been working on displays for the school corridors and a competition for their classmates to reinforce the importance of keeping safe while near the roads.
Year 6 teacher, Victoria Buckley, has been impressed with their efforts. She said: “The children worked attentively. We have also addressed parking issues around the school and the children will be writing to parents with advice and guidance around parking before and after school. I have been really impressed by their dedication to the project.”
