Old adverts from 1972 as seen in the pages of the Grantham Journal
As parents focus their attention on all things back to school we delved into the Journal's archive from 50 years ago to see the adverts trying to wow people to spend their cash on school essentials and more.
While the prices are eye-opening - and include half pennies - there's still many similarities between the adverts we pulled out from the Journal on Friday, August 25th 1972 and today.
That includes the adverts for household names like Clarks which still exists on the High Street in 2022.
The black and white adverts include sketches and special offer coupons which would be much appreciated now as Britons face rising energy prices, inflation and a cost of living crisis.
One advert, for Premium Bonds from National Savings, references the space suits of the American astronauts, dating the advert to the Apollo age. While its been 50 years since anyone went to the Moon, later this week Nasa will try again to launch Artemis 1 as part of its longer-term plans to return astronauts to the Moon.
Elsewhere, there are adverts for insurance, a chemists and a wool shop, and pricing included for groceries at the Co-op and baby essentials at Chemcuts.
Finally, the edition also contained adverts ahead of the long weekend. With a Family Gala, Pop Feast, Barbecue and even a visit to Belvoir Castle advertised which would you have fancied?
