Owners confirm Grantham Book Services to close with loss of 200 jobs

The owners of a book distribution service in Grantham have confirmed they will close it with the loss of around 200 jobs.

Grantham Books Services, on Trent Road, is due to close in 2025.

Penguin Random House said earlier this year that it planned to close the site because it is not commercially viable.

The owners have confirmed the closure following a consultation process with employees.

A spokesperson for Penguin Random House said: “We have provided distribution services to independent and smaller publishers through our warehouse at Grantham for over 30 years, including since 2008 from our current site on Trent Road.

““While we are very proud of our work for our publishing clients, after undertaking a recent strategic review, our findings have shown that unfortunately it is not commercially viable for Penguin Random House to continue running this aspect of our operations.

“The first stage of collective consultation with impacted colleagues has concluded and the decision has been made to go ahead with this proposal as originally outlined.

“As a result, from late 2025 we will close our third-party publishing distribution business and our site in Grantham. This was a very difficult decision for us to make and it is with great regret that we confirm that colleagues who work for this part of the business are at risk of redundancy. Our priority is to support these colleagues through the rest of the consultation process and in the run-up to the closure.”
