Son hopes to carry on success of family salon Tailored Hair in Grantham with husband’s help
A man and his husband are hoping to continue his parents legacy as he takes over the family salon in Grantham.
Ollie Taylor-Banks has taken over Tailored Hair in Sunningdale from his parents, Joanne and Chris Taylor, with the help of his husband, Adam Taylor-Banks.
Ollie has recently transformed the salon into what he calls a “rustic garden haven”, which has “outdoor and vintage inspired vibes”, adding that he sees the place as his “second home”.
He said: “I started hairdressing when I was 16 and was always very passionate about doing it after growing up watching my mum in her salon.
“There's something so satisfying about making someone feel good about themself.”
Ollie joined Tailored Hair in 2014, and in 2018 he took up a role with hair brand Milshake Hair as an educator.
He said: “After some intense training and refreshing I travelled around the Midlands helping other salons build confidence in colouring.
“I later had the opportunity to work backstage at shows and finally got my dream of working backstage at Salon International as well as Pro Hair Live and other amazing things.
“It was truly a whirlwind!”
When lockdown came, Ollie said he had time to reflect, and chose to prioritise the salon, stepping back from his work at Milkshake.
He continued: “My mum and dad have been my backbone since I joined them and they have supported me every step of the way.
“We've all finally hit a point where we feel ready for me to take the front seat.
“Luckily for me my mum and dad are always behind me and I can't see that changing for as long as they can and it's a privilege being their son.”
Joanne set up Tailored Hair 24 years ago and was a hairdresser for a total of over 40 years.
Ollie said: “Following in my mum's footsteps are pretty big shoes to fill. She's spent years grafting and putting smiles on people's faces.”
OIlie noted his mum’s low staff turnover across the years, giving the salon a “family” feel.
He added: “I have that same connection with my girls Cerys Elliott and Emma McDonald who I'm so proud to have working alongside me and I love seeing them grow as stylists!”
The salon was named as the Grantham Journal’s Business of the Year in 2019.
Ollie added: “If me and my husband can continue to run the salon as well as my mum and dad have over the years, I will be very very happy.”
