Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh among a flock of visitors to the 101st Flintham Ploughing Match and Show at Scarrington House
Flintham and District Agricultural Society’s 101st Ploughing Match and Show was graced by Royalty today (Thursday).
Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh was a visitor to the event at Scarrington House, Scarrington.
The approachable Duchess was given a tour of the showground on a tractor and trailer and met many of the show-goers, stopping for chats and sharing jokes.
She was accompanied by the Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, Sir John Peace.
There were also many civic attendees from the borough of Rushcliffe and the county.
It was an exciting day of country attractions for a bumper crowd, including many school and nursery parties.
The show is steeped in tradition — including the spectacular horse and tractor ploughing competition which started the show over 100 years ago and is still a highlight today.
Vintage, classic, and modern tractors took part in the competition.
Highlights of the main ring included the Shetland Pony Grand National, involving young jockeys, cattle and tractor parades, a horse and carriage display and a Gundog Scurry Competition.
The hounds of the South Notts Hunt were welcomed into the main ring.
Tractor rides took place all day.
There were hands-on fishing displays, and the educational zone was packed with opportunities for children to learn about farming heritage and students to gain advice about careers in agriculture.
Visitors could also peruse a variety of trade stands, watch the skilled competitors battle it out in a traditional hedging competition, see livestock displays, visit the horticultural marquee, and refuel at the bar and refreshment area with live music.
