Jobs joy as bike firm rides into Grantham

A booming bike firm has relocated some of its London-based operations to Grantham, creating 16 jobs.

Leading cycle retailer Sigma Sports has opened a new 33,000 sq ft distribution centre close to the A1.

The building, previously used to store sugar, will be used to distribute clothing, accessories and nutrition products.

Sigma Sports chose Grantham for its new warehouse due to its excellent transport links, enabling the quick delivery of its goods across the country. Four supervisor and ten warehouse roles were created, all going to locals, with one employee transferring up from south-west London.

The renovated warehouse includes 15,000 sq ft of racking, a complete rewiring of the building, plus staff showers to encourage cycling to work.Sigma Sports expect the larger, more efficient warehouse, which replaces a facility in south-west London, will give it the capacity needed to continue growing online sales at 50 per cent a year.

Retail director Jason Turner said the relocation took place over one weekend and involved 14 articulated lorries and over 300 pallets. Some 900 orders were sent out on Granthamâ s first day.

Sigma Sports, which has a store in Kingston Upon Thames, first began selling bikes in 1992 and now claims annual sales around £25 million a year, mostly online.

Mr Turner said there are no plans for retail sales at the Grantham site, but the company is looking to create a click and collect operation in Grantham or Oakham.

â The reason we have taken on such a large warehouse is that we can grow into it.â

Managing director Ian Whittingham said: â Our online retail offer is more than a shop- itâ s a place for cyclists to learn about the latest trends, technology and stories surrounding the sport. Itâ s an approach which is creating huge demand from our customers. Our new warehouse will help us meet this demand.â
