Storm Dennis floods village near Grantham leaving neighbours 'absolutely terrified'
Neighbours in a road in Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir witnessed a flood that was “the worst it’s ever been” over the weekend.
According to residents, the floods on Sedgebrook Road were caused by a blocked drain under the road, which could not cope with the sheer amount of rainfall.
The issue of the blocked drain is said to have plagued the residents of Sedgebrook Road for over three years, with images from last year showing similar levels of flooding.
Keith Mellor, a resident of Sedgebrook Road, said: “We don't think we are being unreasonable to expect a drain to be cleared by Lincolnshire County Council.
“Even if we have had extreme weather conditions in the last three years, the ditch is always going to flood because the drain is blocked.
“The seven years my partner lived here before, the drain blocked when it rained persistently for a week at a time the ditch would rise but never flood.
“It’s just bureaucracy after bureaucracy. If they spent as much time and money on fixing pipes as they did having meetings about meetings, then maybe it would get sorted.
“We’re not expecting the world, we just want the drain fixed.”
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue reportedly spent more than eight hours attempting to drain the flood water.
Keith continued: “To waste that much of the fire department’s resources on something so silly, that could’ve been prevented, is ridiculous.
“It’s lucky that no one has been hurt but it’s only a matter of time.”
Nadine Dobson, 70, whose garden was worst-affected by the flooding, said: “I was up in the early hours of Monday looking to see if it was flooded in case I had to go to the doctors.
“I’ve rang time and time again and told the council.”
Nadine, who has recently had a new hip, has lived on Sedgebrook Road for 33 years. She added: “It keeps happening and it’s absolutely terrifying. It’s the worst it’s ever been.
“We do sympathise with people when it's gone in their houses but it’s only a matter of time before our houses get flooded.”
A spokesperson for Lincolnshire County Council said: "We have carried out an investigation into the causes of flooding on Sedgebrook Road and a report will be released soon. However, the council is confident that the culvert underneath the road – which has been cleaned out recently – is not blocked, and has not contributed to flooding in the area.
"Once the report has been published, we will be working with local landowners and other agencies to action the recommendations and help prevent further flooding in this area in future."
