Denton Street Market does brisk business in spring sunshine
Spring sunshine greeted visitors to Denton Street Market on Bank Holiday Monday with only a brief shower during the annual community fund-raising event.
There was brisk business for the traditional mix of village and charity stalls, children’s entertainment, bric-a-brac, street traders and plants. Food stalls did a roaring trade, St Andrews Church displays and craft stalls were extremely popular and The Welby Arms pub re-enforced its growing local popularity.
Organisers had to contend with traffic problems after torrential rain in the run up to the market prevented use of the normal car park field, leading to severe congestion into the village.
Nigel Elias, one of the event organisers said; “We apologise for the problems we know that many people experienced on the roads, and would like to thank those who sent goodwill messages recognising that we did our best to manage the situation.
“Many months of careful planning go into delivering the market but the one thing we cannot control is the weather. In the market’s 30-plus years, it’s only the second time that the field has been waterlogged and unusable.”
Mr Elias added: “Denton’s market has survived where many other local events have fallen by the wayside, and that’s down to the remarkable core of people who organise it and ensure that our beneficiaries of the school, village hall and church continue to receive much needed donations.”
