Sun shines down on Grantham Journal Children’s Fund coronation SUNday FUNday
Forecast rain kept away and instead the sun shone down – ensuring a special Grantham event kept true to its name.
Families descended on Wyndham Park yesterday (Sunday) as the Grantham Journal Children’s Fund (GJCF) held its second SUNday FUNday.
The coronation-themed event was tailored to families with disabled children, in keeping with the aims of the registered charity, but was also open to the general public.
GJCF chairman Roy Wright said after the event: “The people I’ve spoken to have all said it’s been a marvellous, marvellous day.
“We do it to bring families together, but then it’s also a way of letting people with able children see how people with disabled children live and how they cope. How difficult it can be but how they all smile while they’re doing it, like they have today.
“Many, many thanks must go to all those who gave their time to volunteer at the event. We couldn’t have done it without you.”
Visitors took rides on Robbie the land train, hopped on fairground rides, watched dance displays, danced to disco music and enjoyed an up close look at various exotic animals.
There was also a display of model tanks by the Grantham Light Armoured Division, a crown-decorating craft table, Punch and Judy show, balloon modelling, stalls to browse and refreshments to tuck into.
The event was supported by the Grantham Disabled Children Society (GDCS), with members volunteering throughout the day.
More than 25 member families went along to the SUNday FUNday.
GDCS trustee Darryl Blair said: “It was great to see some many stalls and a special thanks must go to Emily Topham and Wendy Aspland, who raised a magnificent £250 for GDCS.
“A special thank you to our members who helped out setting up and dismantling the marquees and gazebos.
“GDCS would like to thank the Grantham Journal Children’s Fund for organising the event.”
The fund is a registered charity which helps families with disabled children through financial grants, and also puts on an annual event free to the families it supports to give them a day to make special memories without financial burden.
