Grantham man started out offering free safety checks for ICT equipment and now runs his own small business

A Grantham technician who started out by offering his services for free, now runs a professional service.

Back in 2021, Joshua Czarnecki wanted to do his bit to help during lockdown by providing free PAT (portable appliance testing) for schools receiving donations of technology to enable homeschooling.

Since then, a business has grown for Joshua with the help of his grandparents.

Joshua said: “The safety aspects of electricity have always captivated me, but because I have autism, I knew that working on fixed electrical systems would be too much for me to handle because I get really anxious and uncomfortable doing that kind of work.

“Because more local businesses and landlords are requiring PAT Testing for insurance purposes, my grandparents suggested that I take on PAT Testing as a professional service.

“When portable electrical equipment is not connected to fixed wiring and has a three-pin plug, it is subjected to safety testing known as PAT Testing. And to think, I never regretted switching careers! I absolutely enjoy my job!”

Joshua explained that he had always wanted to start his own small business, but he could not drive or travel alone due to “independence issues in public”.

“Fortunately, my grandfather has offered to be my work chauffeur,” said Joshua. “Making it possible for me to go to appointments.

“When I'm out and about, I have trouble with my slow processing memory, so my grandparents are there to help.

“Although I already have a work van of my own, my grandfather drives it while I ride in the passenger seat because I am incapable of doing so. I might be able to drive on my own at some point in the future, but it's not likely right now.

“But that hasn't stopped me from running my own little PAT testing business. My goal as a professional PAT Tester is to give Grantham and the surrounding areas the best service I can without sacrificing quality.

“Because I have top-notch Seaward test equipment, my prices are reasonable for the level of service you will receive. Because I do the job correctly, I charge more than national companies.”
