This is what happened when Grantham Journal photographer Toby Roberts tried the world's hottest chilli
Ten years ago today, Journal photographer Toby Roberts tried the hottest chilli in the world - and it was captured on camera.
We came across this gem of a story while looking through the Journal dated 10 years ago today for this week's Memory Lane nostalgia pages.
In April 2010, the Infinity chilli, grown in the back garden of Nick Woods on the Manthorpe estate in Grantham, was recognised as the hottest chilli in the world - more than 200 times hotter than a jalapeño.
Our Toby jumped at the chance to give it a try.
Bravely, he bit into the whole chilli, a dried out version, right down to the stalk and for a moment it looked like he was going to take it all in his stride.
But within 30 seconds of swallowing it was a different story. First his heart began to race, then he lost the ability to speak. His eyes began to water, he broke out in a sweat and he got the shakes.
Afterwards he admitted: “I was a millisecond away from puking. But I knew if I did it would be a YouTube hit in no time. There was a point where I started to panic because I didn’t know when it was going to stop getting worse.”
We found the YouTube video and couldn't resist sharing it all over again! Sorry Toby...
