This is what is planned for the former job centre and Grantham Journal offices in St Peter’s Hill

A planning application has been submitted to change the use of a former job centre.

M&M Willett Homes Ltd has revealed plans to convert the former job centre in St Peter’s Hill, Grantham, into 12 flats.

The proposal, if successful, would change the four-storey office building into 12 flats, eight of which would have two bedrooms, while the other four would have one bedroom each.

The building, now called St Peter’s House, was used as the Journal offices between 2013 and 2018 and would see minimal external changes as part of the plans.

It has most recently housed offices, but is now vacant and a recent search has failed to find any interested occupants.

The proposal would be a “no-parking development”, aimed at supplying homes for residents who do not have access to a car.

The application cited examples of other “no-parking developments” that had been approved in Grantham, including flat developments in Stuart Street, Norton Street and Castlegate.

The application said the plans respond to “an identified need for low-cost entry-level accommodation within the town centre area”.

It added: “There is a significant demand at this time for smaller unit flatted accommodation.

“Increased residential occupancy in town centre areas is recognised as a positive planning measure, contributing to town centre character and vitality.”

St Peter’s House dates back to the 1960s and its architecture is described as “somewhat brutal” in the planning application.
