Sainsbury’s in Grantham introduces new locking system to stop trolleys being dumped in River Witham

A new locking system has been launched by a Grantham supermarket to stop trolleys being dumped in a nearby river.

Trolleys were often seen dumped in the River Witham behind the Sainsbury’s store, in London Road, and were regarded as “unsightly”, by resident Stacey Staff in a previous Journal report.

Sainsbury’s has now introduced a new trolley locking system, which will see the trolley wheels lock past a certain area of the premises.

Stacey said: “Sainsbury’s have kept me informed with work being done to prevent [dumping trolleys] from happening.

“[The system] means as soon as they are removed from the premises, the trolleys automatically lock.

“It seems to be working.”

Grantham RiverCare, made up of group of volunteers who regularly carry out litter picks in and around the river, has fished out many trollies during clean-ups.

Ian Simmons, co-lead of Grantham RiverCare, said: “The incidence of trollies in the Witham has reduced recently.

“Anything that stops trollies and other stuff from ending up in the river is a good thing!”
