Environment Agency explains likely reason of why River Witham in Grantham turned green

The most likely cause of the River Witham recently turning green has been explained.

Last week, Grantham resident Stacey Harwin Dobbin spotted that the River Witham had turned a bright shade of green where the Mowbeck flows into the River Witham under the white bridge.

Anglian Water confirmed that the discolouration was not related to any of its assets, and the issue is now under the responsibility of the Environment Agency.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said that residents should not be concerned by the green river, but added that they were not aware of the source of the discolouration.

They said: “The bright green coloured dye spotted in the River Witham in Grantham, has the appearance of fluorescein, a pigment which breaks down naturally and is non-toxic to the aquatic environment.

“Whilst it can look alarming, it is a common dye used by organisations such as the Environment Agency, water companies, drainage specialists and sub-contractors to trace hidden pathways in sewers.

“We are not aware of the source of the dye appearing at this location, but residents should not be concerned and can expect the it to disappear with the next few days.
