Toy fund-raiser launched for Grantham boy with incurable cancer

A special fund-raiser has been launched for a brave little boy with an incurable form of cancer, to make his time left “the best ever”.

Seven-year-old Lucas Myers-Mascot, a pupil at Belton Lane Primary School in Grantham, was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2017 when he was just four years old.

He has undergone several major brain surgeries in the last couple of years, as well as many gruelling bouts of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment at the Queen’s Medical Centre, in Nottingham, in a bid to get rid of the tumour and to stop it from growing back.

But earlier this month his family were dealt the heartbreaking news that there was nothing more that could be done for their little boy.

Lucas, who lives on Queensway with his mum, Amanda Myers, and siblings Sophie and Cameron, is now receiving chemotherapy at home in a bid to slow the cancer spread down.

Determined to help the family make as many memories as they can, family friend Ian Shaw, of Barrowby, has started a crowdfunder to raise money towards purchasing toys and treats for Lucas.

Within just 24 hours of launching the appeal online last week, more than £1,000 had been donated from family, friends and even strangers – double the original £500 target.

At the time of going to press, nearly £3,000 had been raised with donations still rolling in.

Ian, 34, said: “I have a child of the same age and just had to do something.

“Lucas is such a little warrior. He is just seven years old and it shouldn’t be happening.

“We want to make his last months the best days of his life and buy him whatever he wants, consoles, toys – all the things that children love.

“If anyone deserves the best, it’s Lucas.”

Ian and Lucas’s family have been overwhelmed with the level of response to the fund-raiser.

He added: “It has been incredibly moving and emotional to receive all the messages from people who have donated.

“I admit that some of them have moved me to tears as they’ve just been so touching.

“So please everybody keep on donating whatever you can afford. It doesn’t matter how small. It all counts.”

Any funds left over will go towards covering Lucas’s funeral costs.
