Grantham Charter Trustees want to revive Gravity Fields festival

Charter Trustees have made a pledge to commit themselves to reviving the Gravity Fields festival.

The biennial festival was last seen in Grantham in 2018 before the Covid pandemic meant it could not be put on in 2020 and since then the district council has said it is unable to give any financial support.

At a meeting of the Grantham Charter Trustees on Wednesday (June 14), it was agreed that a concerted effort must be made to try and revive the event.

It was also agreed that St Wulfram’s Church would be one of the main players in that revival and would strive to get funding for a future event.

Rector of St Wulfram’s Father Stuart Cradduck told the meeting: “St Wulfram’s is committed to delivering (the event) and throwing our weight behind it and our expertise. The discussions that we had previously were suggesting that we needed the ‘soft’ help from the district council that they have in the past offered us.”

Fr Stuart said funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund was needed and the church would sperahead any application for funding from other sources as well, including the Arts Council.

He added: We would desperately like this to happen. We see it as a really good thing for the town and for the district. It’s about getting the name of Grantham out there. That can only be a good thing.

Coun Tim Harrison put his support behind a revived Gravity Fields. He said: “If we carry it on it’s only going to get bigger and better. We will get people coming from all over the country.

“I own a cab company and a lot of people have seen that I have been elected and one of the big things they mention is can we get this back and that back, can we get the raft race running again, all these feelgood things we had in the town, like the carnival.

Councillor Graham jeal said: “To honour the legacy of the event it would have to be on a certain scale.”

Coun Harrison agreed. “This town does everything half cock. So I think if we are gong to do something let’s make it a big thing and show people we can do this and do it properly.”

Coun Paul Stokes, cabinet member for leisure and culture at SKDC, said the district council could provide a number of venues which would be free such as Wyndham Park for a future Gravity Fields event.
