Video: Back to the First World War at Bottesford Primary School
Bottesford Primary School pupils were transported back in time thanks to the Bottesford Parish First World War Centenary Project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
A collaboration between the local heritage group and the school, it saw over 250 pupils enjoy an activities day with volunteers and experts on hand to answer questions.
The Leicestershire and Rutland Western Front Association displayed a range of memorabilia, while Ian and Betty Douglas of the Lincolnshire branch brought along a working model of a First World War tank.
The British Red Cross provided period nurses’ uniforms and Belvoir Care and Fox Medics demonstrated battle field first aid. Staff and pupils enjoyed dressing up, and even their school lunch was based on wartime recipes.
Memories of the day are to be incorporated into a commemorative textile banner. Project co-ordinator David Middleton said: “We had a brilliant day. The sun shone and everyone joined in the activities with enthusiasm and enjoyment. It was a real community effort with over 40 volunteers from the school, the community and beyond helping over 250 pupils to understand the impact of the First World War on the life of those who served.
“The feedback from the children said it all - ‘Thank you it was AMAZING’, ‘The best day ever!’, ‘My favourite theme day while I have been at primary school’, and ‘It made me realise they should never be forgotten.’”
