VIDEO: Grantham man played a part in a ‘horrifying attack’ which left two men unconscious

A Grantham man is among eight men – including six doormen – who received 18-month suspended sentences for affray outside a chip shop, which left two men unconscious.

Nottingham Crown Court heard on Friday how police officers called to the Castlegate Fish Bar in Newark arrived to find one man had been kicked and punched unconscious and another had been struck to the side of the head when he challenged the group of doormen.

One of the men was also struck again as he walked away, causing him to fall against a parked car and hit his head before being kicked by one of the men as he lay unconscious.

Detectives investigating the incident, which took place on September 13 last year, found six of the men had been working as licensed door staff at two premises in the town, while the other two were friends who had posed as door staff to gain free entry to a nearby boxing event in the town earlier that evening.

All eight were sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court after they pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing.

Steven Drake, 27, of Houghton Road, Grantham, received an 18-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to carry out 200 hours’ unpaid work, will be subject to a 12-month supervision order and was ordered to pay £200 costs.

The remaining seven men each received an 18-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years. They were also ordered to carry out 250 hours unpaid work and pay £200 costs. They were Amit Goldsborough, 32, of Barnby Gate, Newark, Leigh Hagan, 34, of Eagle Road, North Scarle, Ray Moore, 39, of George Street, Newark, Ben Wells, 23, of School Gardens, Oxton, Callum Moon, 21, of Chatsworth Road, Newark, Daniel Berry, 35, of Grange Road, Newark, and Peter Green, 45, of Spring Gardens, Newark.

Neighbourhood policing inspector for Newark, Inspector Louise Clarke, said: “This is a particularly horrifying attack that lasted just over two minutes but managed to leave two men unconscious, including one who was left with cracked teeth, a broken nose and a fractured sternum.

“We want to be absolutely clear that violence will not be tolerated from anyone in Nottinghamshire – and especially not those whose responsibility it is to keep the public safe as they enjoy an evening out in our county’s city and town centres.

“Nottinghamshire Police has a long-standing record of working with licensed premises, security companies and local authority licensing departments across all our town and city centres to prevent this kind of deplorable violence.

“The eight convictions in this case simply would not have been possible without the cooperation of the premises in Newark town centre and we would like to place on-record our thanks to them for reaffirming their commitment to making Newark town centre a safe and enjoyable place to enjoy an evening out.”
