Village cafe near Grantham provides boost to local community

A new cafe in Caythorpe has provided a brand new place for villagers to enjoy.

Based in Caythorpe village hall, the School Run Cafe serves delicious home-made treats and has become a much-needed hub for the local community.

Opened in December, the cafe has been an instant hit in the village and has garnered attention on a wider scale. BBC Radio Lincolnshire came to visit on 23 January, showcasing the cafe to the entire county live on their breakfast show.

Caroline, who runs the School Run Cafe by herself, said: “We opened early at 7am to be on the radio. It attracted loads of customers. I didn’t stop all day. It was great.

“Caythorpe is a small village. There’s not a lot on, no cafe, there’s just a couple of pubs. There was nowhere to go and nothing to do for parents between nursery pickup time at 3pm and school pickup time at 3.30pm, which is fine in summer, but not in winter.”

Serving everything from hot drinks to home made cakes, sausage rolls to scones, the School Run Cafe is doing a fine job of getting the village’s older residents up and out of the house.

The cafe is already heavily involved in the Caythorpe community, hosting a Thursday morning book club, as well as offering a place to socialise after a monday fitness class. However, they want to offer even more clubs to the local residents.

Caroline added: “We are keen to get more clubs here. Recently, we got in the village paper, using Caythorpe news and views to spread the word to older residents who may not use or have access to Facebook.”

As well as offering homemade Victoria sponge and sausage rolls every week, a new treat is beginning to steal the show.

The cafe offers a wide range of fresh, gooey cookies, from Snickers flavoured to Smarties. The snack has proved so popular with customers that it even has its own special day. According to Caroline, Cookie monster Monday is “extremely popular. We’ve been cleaned out every Monday”.

Individual, home made cakes with novelty icing can also be made to order at the School Run Cafe. They are perfect for birthdays, weddings or even christenings.

One satisfied reviewer of the cafe said: “Visited here this morning. had a beautiful slice of Victoria sponge and a black forest hot chocolate that was incredible. Highly recommended! even an area for little ones to play.”

Another shared the enjoyment of the black forest hot chocolate: “Had the most amazing Black Forest hot chocolate and croissant. Lovely friendly and beautifully arranged café with gorgeous homemade cakes and treats. Definitely recommend you pop in and try something.”
