Irnham resident praises pub’s quiz nights and Italian evening

A village resident has shared some recent events held there.

Donough McGillycuddy submitted the following words following a quiz night and Italian evening at The Griffin, Irnham:

Few things challenge the mind as sorely as not being able to answer a question in a quiz. National tabloids publish daily many tests to suit a wide audience. There are few more homely places for a quiz than in the local pub. The wood fire is glowing, Louise is pulling steady pints, the tables are crowded and the Question Master ensures that everyone has answer sheets.

At the end of each round of questions, the sheets swap tables for independent marking. After four rounds the scores are added up and a prize goes to the winning team.

Rick Clegg sat on a stool in the middle of the room firing questions that we should all know the answers to. “In which did Columbus sail across the Atlantic? - Where was Mary Queen of Scots beheaded? – When was Magna Carta written?” Well, if you did not know the answers, for heaven’s sake do NOT tell your most recent history teacher!

The silver trophy that Sir James Benton Jones pulled off the top shelf above the bar was awarded to Irnham Youth Club and their very bright team including Medi and Connor Watters, Ben Green, Delyth Gilmar and Jonathan Younger.

On account of travel upsets due to industrial action, and a proliferation of wild fires across parts of Southern Europe, many have been denied their foreign fare this Summer.

What better place to be reminded of what one has missed than a special evening laid on in the local pub.

While not professing to be a ‘Cordon Bleu’ cook of European dishes, Jordan Filsell, Chef at The Griffin, put on both a tasty ‘Carbonara’ and an excellent hot Lasagne. Both can be easily be purchased in any supermarket. Then you have to cook or heat it yourself. Much better have the delicious foreign dish served in a warm and cosy atmosphere with convivial company and excellent service.

The Griffin is set to expand its European evenings, Tempranillo with Spanish dishes, Cotes de Gasgone for the French and a nice Rhine wine with the Viener Schnitzel. Don’t miss out!
