Villagers urged to give views on plans to convert Caythorpe pub into restaurant

A plea has gone out residents in Caythorpe to voice their views on plans to convert a village pub into a restaurant and bakery.

Members of Caythorpe Parish Council are due to consider the proposals, which have been drawn up for the Waggon and Horses pub in High Street.

We would welcome local people to come along and give their views.

Councillor Andy Roberts said: “The parish council will hold an open session before the meeting at which we would welcome local people to come along and give their views on the plans and what they see as the way forward.”

The meeting will take place at the village’s sports and social club in Old Lincoln Road on Tuesday starting at 6.30pm.

The parish’s views will be passed on to South Kesteven District Council’s planning committee, which will decide whether the the proposals should go ahead.

The plans have been drawn up by owners, Totemic Property, of Kempton House, Dysart Road, Grantham, which says the pub is not a viable business.

Under the proposals the grade two listed Waggon and Horses pub would be closed and turned into a restaurant and a separate bakery.

In addition, the car park and gardens would be used for the construction of three homes in a single terrace.

The proposals for the 0.16 hectares site involve converting the ground floor of the two-storey building into a restaurant, with the single storey wing to the north converted into a bakery and shop. The upper floor would be residential use in connection with the ground floor uses.

The aim is to maintain the community use of the buildings but the owners warn other options may have to be considered.

A statement accompanying the application reads: “For some considerable time the public house has been operating at a loss.This is not a viable long-term proposition, and without viable alternative use proposals coming forward in the near future the premises will cease trading and will close.”
