‘Delight’ as hundreds enjoy Grantham’s historical sites as part of Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days
There was “delight” as hundreds of people gathered to explore sites of historical significance in Grantham over the weekend.
A range of venues in the town and surrounding villages were opened over the weekend as part of Lincolnshire Heritage Week.
Among those places open to the public in Grantham were St Wulfram’s Church and its Trigge Library, the hidden cemetery on Manthorpe Road and Grantham House.
Grantham House also hosted an ‘Artisan Brocante’, a type of outdoor market, on Saturday, which featured a number of stalls.
John Manterfield, chairman of Grantham Civic Society, said: 'We were absolutely delighted with the response to Heritage Open Days in 2023.
“Despite the hot and humid weather, over 750 visitors were recorded across the three sites at St Wulfram's Church, the hidden graveyard on Manthorpe Road and the gardens of Grantham House.
“We had much positive feedback from visitors in person and on social media.
“In St Wulfram's church, the Francis Trigge Chained Library was especially popular with a range of visitors from Grantham, elsewhere in Lincolnshire and as far as Oxford.
“Other families climbed up the tower visited the ringing chamber and tried ringing the bells. Much fun was had by all.”
Still to come this week are tours of Grantham Cemetery, in Harrowby Road, which go through the graves of those who contributed to the town’s history, including a victim of the Grantham railway crash in 1906.
These 90-minute sessions take place at 3.30pm on Friday, September 15, and at 9.45am and 11.15am on Saturday, September 16.
They must be pre-booked by contacting John Manterfield on 01476 565782 or jbmanterfield1955@gmail.com
Guided walks of Bellmount Tower will leave from Londonthorpe Woods car park on Sunday, September 17, between 10am and 2pm.
