Western Power Distribution issues safety warning after motorists seen removing barriers at Bingham level crossing to get past

A safety warning has been issued to motorists after some removed barriers to get past a level crossing closed for electrical works.

Western Power Distribution (WPD) engineers have given the urgent warning after drivers were seen removing the barriers at the Bingham level crossing on Chapel Lane despite diversion signs.

Engineers are carrying out electricity works for the new leisure centre.

A spokesman said: "Engineers from WPD have issued an urgent safety warning to road users after drivers moved barriers and drove over a level crossing, while it was closed for electricity works.

"The level crossing at Chapel Lane is closed this week to allow WPD to install a new underground electricity cable to supply the new leisure centre at Bingham.

"During the closure, WPD teams have been alarmed to see drivers move safety barriers and drive over the crossing, in spite of clear diversion signs. Trains are continuing to use the line while the crossing is closed."

Dave Hewitt, WPD distribution manager for Nottingham, said: “We’ve been extremely concerned to discover that some drivers have moved safety barriers and driven over the crossing, which is clearly an extremely dangerous thing to do.

"We would urge all road users not to venture onto the line and, if possible, to use the signposted diversion route for the short time that the work is taking place.”

The road is due to be closed until Friday, January 28, to allow for the cable-laying work to be completed.
