Then and Now: Welby Street in Grantham was formerly called Blue Man Street




Welby Street was formerly called Blue Man Street, writes Ruth Crook of Grantham Civic Society.

In 1832 some recently built houses were offered for rent.

In the Stamford Mercury they were advertised as ‘Valuable property, offering eligible opportunity for advantageous investment. To be sold by auction, by W Wood.

‘On Saturday the 17th of March, 1832, at Six o’clock in the evening, at the house of Mr. Green, the Blue Ram Inn, in Grantham, in one or two lots, All those six conveniently-designed and recently built Brick and Tiled sash-windowed Messuages or Dwelling-houses, with Yards, Gardens, Back Road and other Conveniences attached, all respectably tenanted at a rent of 7/- each, situate in the improving neighbourhood called Blue-man-street, Westgate, Grantham.
