Take part in our poll to tell us who you think is right – Grantham’s St Wulfram’s Church or neighbour Peter Escreet

As the battle between a Grantham church and neighbour over vehicle access continues, we’re keen to know what YOU think and invite you to take part in a poll below.

The dispute between St Wulfram’s Church and neighbour Peter Escreet has been widely reported and has divided opinion locally.

Mr Escreet lives in Church Trees and his property fronts the footway at the centre of the disagreement.

The church, supported by Lincolnshire County Council, says it is entitled to use the footway connecting the church with Swinegate for vehicle access. It says the route is only used for deliveries, contractors, emergency vehicles, and access for wedding and funeral vehicles.

However, Mr Escreet says vehicles using the path are causing damage to his property and are a danger to pedestrians. He claims parents use the access route to drop off and collect their children from nearby National Junior School and adds “this is a historic part of Grantham and these old footpaths aren't designed to be taking vehicles”.

After parking his vehicle on the footway to block access for several weeks last year – before being told not to by the county council – he has more recently begun placing planters in front of his home instead. These are being removed by the local authority.

Opinions shared in the Journal’s letters pages and on our social media pages are mixed. Some believe Mr Escreet to be “inconsiderate” while others feel he’s “doing what he needs to do to protect his property and family”.
