Woods event marks centenary of end of Great war

If you went down to Londonthorpe Woods last Saturday, you were in for a wartime surprise.

The Woodland Trust staged a First World War event featuring games, crafts and activities, to mark the centenary of the end of the Great War.

The event, staged in the wood which hosted Lord Kitchener’s biggest training camps, attracted more than 200 people, braving the hot weather, plus Grantham Dramatic Society in their finest costumes and others from across the region dressed as Canadian Forestry Corps and Royal Engineer Forestry Companies.

Trust spokesman Andy Bond said the event was well-received with attendees enjoying the history and scenic beauty of the wood. They were also keen to hear of Trust plans for the 225ha woodland.
