AFC Colsterworth Sports and Social Club pushing for honours in the Nottinghamshire Senior League
AFC Colsterworth Sports and Social Club were victorious in their first home match for more than a month to continue their push for honours in the Nottinghamshire Senior League on Saturday.
The Apples were 4-1 home winners over Calverton Miners Welfare in their Division Two clash which was played on a very boggy Colsterworth pitch that was a leveller in the game for both teams.
Going uphill in the first half, Colsterworth tried tirelessly to put the ball in the net but a stubborn Calverton side made sure the score remained goalless at half-time.
The home side came out stronger in the second half and a Sam Scothern header found the back of the net to put the Apples a goal ahead.
Shortly after the visitors were awarded a penalty when Ben Lund brought down the Calverton striker in the box and the away side levelled things up at 1-1 through Kian Clarkson.
Scothern converted substitute Nathan Brettoner's cross to put the Apples back in front and that was followed by an Eathan Milne strike making it 3-1.
The points were all but sealed when Brettoner latched onto a loose ball in the box before firing home to crown the 4-1 success.
The victory leaves Colsterworth in second spot, two points behind league leaders Shirebrook Soldiers with two games in hand.
The Apples remain undefeated in the league after 18 games with 15 wins and three draws. They travel to fourth-placed Greyfriars on Saturday.
